March 21, 2025

Axe throwing is already a blast. Adding some friendly competition takes the fun to the next level. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, planning a corporate event, or just looking for a fun night out with friends, Stumpy’s Hatchet House is the perfect place to put your skills to the test.

You can never go wrong with one of our fan-favorite throwdowns, but if you’re ready to mix things up, here are five more axe throwing games to try next time you book a lane.

Heads up! Some of these games offer fast-paced fun, but you should never sacrifice safety for speed. Always follow the safety guidelines you learned in training to ensure everybody has a great time.

1. Bullseye Relay

Great for: Big groups looking for team-building activities.

Number of Players: 4+

Want to kick up the energy and get everyone involved? This game turns axe throwing into a relay race where teamwork is key.

How to Play:

  • Split your party evenly into multiple teams. (The more throwing lanes you have booked, the more teams can play at once.)
  • Have one player from each team keep throwing until they hit a bullseye.
  • Once one player lands a bullseye, have the next teammate step up to take their turn.
  • The first team to have every player hit a bullseye wins!

Bullseye Relay is fast, exciting, and a total crowd-pleaser. Get ready to start cheering on your teammates and celebrating every perfect throw!

2. Even or Odd

Perfect for: Players looking for a game of strategy.

Number of Players: 2+

This axe throwing game adds a simple but fun twist to scoring to raise the stakes of each throw.

How to Play:

  • Have each player choose “even” or “odd” before they throw.
  • After the player has thrown their axe, check the target:
    • If the score for the area they hit matches their choice, that player adds those points to their total. For example, if a player who guessed “odd” hits one of the red dots, they earn 7 points.
    • If the player’s score doesn’t match their guess, they get zero points for that round.
  • The first player to 30 points wins!

Even or Odd mixes strategy with a little bit of luck. It’s a great way for beginner axe throwers to practice their precision and get familiar with target scoring.

3. Knockout

Perfect for: Groups seeking high-stakes gameplay.

Number of Players: 4+ (but we recommend at least 6)

This one’s all about outlasting your opponents. Mess up, and you’re out!

How to Play:

  • Choose a random player to throw their axe first.
  • All remaining players must match or beat this player’s score to stay in the game. If they fail to hit the score, they’ll be knocked out of the game.
  • On the next round, choose a new player randomly to throw first.
  • Continue rounds until one player is left standing.

Knockout is great for large groups. The pressure keeps building with every round, making this axe throwing game seriously intense and ridiculously fun.

4. 21 and Over

Perfect for: Advanced axe throwers or players who just like a challenge.

Number of Players: 2+

The goal? Score exactly 21 points. Sounds easy, right? It’s harder than you think!

How to Play:

  • Have each player throw once per round and add the score they hit to their total.
  • If you go over 21 points, your score resets to zero.
  • The first player to hit exactly 21 points without going over wins!

This axe throwing game is all about playing smart and staying cool under pressure. Every throw matters, so aim carefully!

5. Clutch Challenge

Perfect for: Axe throwers looking to level up their accuracy.

Number of Players: 2+

Think you’ve got pinpoint accuracy? It’s time to put your axe throwing skills to the test.

How to Play:

  • Players take turns aiming for each of the four clutch spots (those small red dots on the outside of the target).
  • Once a player has hit all four spots, they begin aiming for the bullseye.
  • The first player to hit all four spots and finish with a bullseye wins!

This game is a great way to practice your skills or just show off your precision. Hitting those tiny targets is no easy task, but you’ll feel like a pro when you do!
